The objectives of the Initiative are to strengthen the argument for river protection and sustainable development through: identifying changes in biodiversity; determining sensitivity of freshwater fish species to changing water quality; identifying areas for protection and rehabilitation; and promoting conservation and management at the local-level for local community empowerment.
Given that little scientific knowledge about freshwater biodiversity exists for this area, local ecological knowledge will guide our work. To accomplish these objectives, activities are designed with, and implemented by local communities. These activities include interview surveys, participatory mapping, fish sampling, and habitat assessment and monitoring.
