Malaysian non-profit organization Indigena (Society for the Conservation of Indigenous Fishes) was registered under the Registrar of Societies Malaysia in June 2013 (PPM-001-12-28062013). This organization was established with local community engagement, research and conservation of native fishes in mind.
The Kinabatangan River Spirit Initiative is a project operated under this NGO. It was conceived on the basis that community participation in research and management is critical for achieving a healthy river, and is based out of Sukau village in the Lower Kinabatangan.
